How Much Did Mike Tyson Make Fighting Jake Paul
The Friday night Mike Tyson vs. Jake Paul fight at AT&T Stadium was a highly anticipated affair that didn't quite live up to the hype.
The fight wasn't technically free to watch, but anyone with a Netflix subscription could tune in to see the fight. Not bad, considering the cost of Netflix subscriptions is far less than the historical price of high-profile boxing pay-per-views. (Although it didn't stop people from complaining about buffering issues during the live stream.)
What was less clear was how much Tyson and Paul made for the fight.
Neither side, nor Netflix, has officially revealed how much the fighters were being paid. But a few hints here and there, some analysis from boxing experts, and a look at recent payouts for big fights can give us a rough idea.
Reports have suggested that Paul was getting a cool $40 million just for stepping into the ring, and Tyson was set to take home $20 million of his own. Paul mentioned the $40 million figure at a previous press conference -- and then doubled down on it by offering to bet his purse at this week's pre-fight press conference.
"I'm here to make $40 million and knock out a legend," Paul said at a press conference in August.
USA Today reported that boxing industry experts estimated Tyson would take home $20 million, though Tyson didn't confirm that number when interviewed by Jimmy Kimmel earlier this year.
We've seen big boxing payouts before -- most memorably in 2017, when UFC star Conor McGregor stepped into the ring with boxing great Floyd Mayweather. The Telegraph reported that McGregor made $30 million for that fight, while Mayweather took home a whopping $100 million.
Of course, both of those fighters were active professionals, and were near the peak of their powers.
The Tyson vs. Paul fight was a very different scenario -- but still lucrative enough for everyone involved.
